The Advantages Of Using Soda Blasting

When the term “sandblasting” is used these days, it’s often a general term used for all different types of abrasive blasting utilising a variety of materials as the abrasive. Different abrasives and varying grades of abrasive are used for different purposes. So when you hear the word sandblasting used, it could be referring to any of the following:

  • Sandblasting (using actual silica sand)
  • Walnut Blasting
  • Garnet Blasting
  • Bead Blasting
  • Soda Blasting

In this post we are going to be looking at the last one – soda blasting – why and when it is used and what the advantages are of using this form of sandblasting.

What Is Soda Blasting?

Soda blasting is a process that uses sodium bicarbonate against a surface and is propelled by compressed air. The idea of soda blasting is that it’s a very mild form of abrasive blasting and is ideal for surfaces that require a more gentle approach. Not only is it good for stripping paint, but it is also great for cleaning grime from surfaces as well.

Soda Blasting Is More Delicate And Gentle

For those delicate jobs that need a little more TLC, soda blasting is the perfect solution. The soft, sharp granules are used to clean, degrease and strip paint without causing any damage to the surface underneath. Compressed air at a high velocity but with low pressure is used to propel the sodium bicarbonate against the surface to be cleaned or stripped; virtually producing no heat during the process and therefore no warping. A skilled soda blasting technician will be able to remove the top coat of a painted surface while leaving the undercoat intact, if so desired. There is a lot of fine control with this abrasive blasting technique.

It’s A Cleanser

While other forms of sandblasting require the surface to be thoroughly cleaned before any abrasive blasting can take place, soda blasting is a one stop method of both cleaning and stripping all at the same time. No need to wash or degrease, just straight into the soda blasting process.

The Advantages Of Soda Blasting In Brief

  • Removes paint
  • Is a degreaser
  • It’s a cleanser
  • Soda blasting is non-aggressive
  • Allows for delicate, fine control
  • Doesn’t damage the underlying surface
  • Won’t pit or warp metal
  • Biodegradable, non toxic and non hazardous
  • Non flammable, non corrosive and mould resistant
  • Water soluble, odourless and environmentally friendly
